Learn To Ride At Yorkshire EC

Temporary closure on

riding school lessons

Update on Riding School Lessons.

We have made the hard decision to keep the school closed until the covid situation has stabilised. The past year was so challenging for our horses, with one minute in one routine the next another, and I don’t think it’s fair to risk that on along with a new bunch of horses who will be adjusting to school life. As things are looking promising, we are working towards a reopening of this summer, but it may be later, depending on what the government gives us all back.

We will be reopening, and we will be so glad to welcome you back and start on with our 3rd generation of teaching ponies, but if you want the horsey fix sooner, give us a shout, and we can help recommend another local centre.

Otherwise, please follow us and keep checking our website for updates, and we will contact everyone once we are alive and kicking.

Stay safe and try to enjoy the spring!

Looking for somewhere to ride...

Alongside our Event Centre and Livery Yard, Yorkshire EC offers it's fantastic facilities to our Riding School, providing our riders with some of the most well schooled, talented horses in the area. Each has super personalities to help our Instructors perfect your skills.

You can hone your skills in one of our four riding arenas -

  • Covered All Weather 20mx40m

  • Outdoor 16mx32m

  • Outdoor 60mx35m

  • Grass Showjumping Paddock with a full set of competition showjumps

  • Woodland and Grass Hacking Tracks with xc fences on site

We pride ourselves on teaching riders to ride correctly, using the 'natural aids' of the rider's seat, leg, and voice, not to rely on the reins and kicking on.

We offer private lessons and occasional semi-private lessons, keeping numbers small and riders in 'open order' so everyone gets to ride and learn as an individual too. We encourage riders to think and to be creative with their horse.

Progressing riders

We require all new riders, regardless of their ability and experience, to book a 30-minute Private Assessment Session to check we match you to suitable horses, Instructors, and other riders.

All our beginner and novice level lessons are taught on a 1 - to 1 private basis to provide the rider with the best chance to develop a strong sense of feel for the horses' movement and a secure riding position.

Riders who have mastered the art of sitting and rising trot along with controlling their horsey teammate around the arena can have the opportunity to ride in our Semi-Private Sessions.

These are tailored to suit so that all riders are of similar ability and goals.

What to wear

Long trousers, i.e., jodhpurs/breeches, jeans, jeggings.

Tops that cover at least the rider's shoulders, ideally long-sleeved.

Footwear must have a low heel 1-2cm, and no detailing that would catch on the stirrup irons.

Jodphur boots and half chaps or long riding boots are ideal or wellies to start.

Trainers or flat-soled footwear are strictly not allowed.

No loose scarves or excessive jewellery should be worn.

Gloves and body protectors are recommended but are not compulsory.

Hats must be worn while riding and must comply with current standards.

Hats are available to hire if you do not have your own.

Please also dress appropriately for the weather conditions. Riding is primarily an outdoor sport.

Please note any riders arriving for the lesson with unsuitable attire run the risk of being refused their ride and session not refunded.

We are fully insured and licensed with Selby Council. All our Team YEC Staff including our horses are suitably experienced, trained and qualified. Staff are DBS checked and regularly attend First Aid and Safeguarding courses.
